India’s first hydrogen fuel cell train, flagged off between Jind and Sonipat on July 17, has travelled more than 1,200 kilometres in its first week of operation, saving over 3,200 litres of diesel while emitting only water vapour, according to the Ministry of Railways.
The train, which marks a significant milestone in India’s transition towards clean and sustainable rail transport, generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The process powers the train without producing smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions, with water vapour being the only by-product.
Developed indigenously by Indian Railways, the 10-coach hydrogen train is equipped with two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars that together generate 2,400 kW of power. The propulsion system is supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinders, enabling efficient and zero-emission operations.
The project has also led to the creation of Indian Railways’ first dedicated hydrogen storage facility at Jind. The infrastructure can store around 3,000 kilograms of green hydrogen, with the fuel stored at pressures of up to 500 bar and dispensed at 350 bar for train operations.
Railways has incorporated multiple safety measures into the project, including independent systems for detecting hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke. The train is also equipped with automatic shut-off mechanisms, continuous ventilation systems and safety features that comply with international standards and mandatory validation requirements.
Following the successful operation of the hydrogen train on the Jind–Sonipat route, Indian Railways is preparing to begin trials on the Delhi route, expanding the use of hydrogen-powered rail technology.
The Ministry said the project represents more than a technological breakthrough, as it lays the foundation for an indigenous hydrogen rail ecosystem in the country. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s efforts to promote sustainable, zero-emission mobility while positioning the country as a leader in clean railway transportation.
