A symbolic visit amidst crucial defence discussions
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations on Friday as the chief guest, marking a significant gesture in the diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Paris.
The visit comes amidst the ongoing negotiations for multi-billion dollars deals involving French fighter jets and submarines for the Indian Military.
Officials from both New Delhi and Paris have emphasized that the visit is more ceremonial than substantive, with no major outcomes expected.
While France is India’s second-largest arms supplier and a longstanding partner, the focus remains crucially on strengthening the strategic partnership rather than finalizing new contracts in the defence sector.
President Macron’s 40-hour state visit will commence in Jaipur on January 25, where he will visit Ajmer Fort and Jantar Mantar, both holding historical significance for the French.
A joint roadshow from Jantar Mantar to Sanganeri Gate and a stopover at Hawa Mahal are planned, concluding with a private dinner hosted by Prime Minister Modi at Rambagh Palace.
On the second day, President Macron will attend the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path as the chief guest, with a contingent from the French army participating. The visit includes interactions at the French Embassy in Delhi, an “At Home” event at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and an official banquet dinner, potentially culminating in major announcements in defense and strategic sectors.
In addition, the visit holds symbolic importance, with President Macron participating in the Republic Day parade, demonstrating the interoperability and joint exercises between the armed forced of both the nations.
This visit also marks the culmination of the 25-anniversary celebrations of the strategic partnership, reflecting the depth and persistent diplomatic ties between India and France.
