GAIL (Gas Authority of India Ltd) inaugurated its first hydrogen green plant in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, aligning with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The event was attended by Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, and GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Sandeep Gupta.
This Green Hydrogen plant, equipped with 10MW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Electrolyzer units, can produce 4.3 TPD of hydrogen through water electrolysis using renewable power.
Initially, the hydrogen will be used alongside natural gas for internal operations at the Vijaipur plant. Plans include dispensing hydrogen to retail customers nearby and transporting it via high-pressure cascades.
To support the green hydrogen production, GAIL is also setting up around 20 MW of solar power plants at Vijaipur, both ground-mounted and floating, alongside sourcing renewable power through open access.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, a key initiative of the Government of India, aims to develop and adopt green hydrogen technologies.
The mission targets 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. Progress includes awarding tenders to support green hydrogen production of 412,000 tonnes per annum.
