The newly inaugurated 594-km Ganga Expressway is expected to dramatically improve freight movement across Uttar Pradesh, generate annual logistics savings of up to Rs 30,000 crore, and accelerate industrial as well as warehousing growth across more than a dozen districts, according to government estimates and industry experts.

The six-lane expressway, which can later be expanded to eight lanes, connects Meerut to Prayagraj through 12 districts and is being positioned as a key logistics and industrial corridor linking western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Industry estimates indicate that UP currently handles nearly 245-260 million tonnes of intra-state freight annually, largely consisting of food grains, construction material, and retail cargo. Outbound freight volumes are estimated at around 135-150 million tonnes, driven by sectors such as electronics, leather, and agricultural produce.

UP Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta told PTI that the expressway would mark “a new chapter” in the state’s economic development by boosting industries, logistics, agriculture, tourism, and employment opportunities.

Gupta said the project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29 in Hardoi, has cut travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from nearly 10-12 hours to around 5-8 hours.

“The expressway is not just a road infrastructure project but an integrated manufacturing and logistics corridor. Faster cargo movement and lower transportation costs could generate annual logistics savings of Rs 25,000-30,000 crore,” Gupta said.

According to him, the state has already received 987 investment proposals worth nearly Rs 46,660 crore along the corridor, while 12 industrial nodes are being developed across 6,507 acres.

Industries such as manufacturing, textiles, food processing, pharmaceuticals, electronics, warehousing, and e-commerce are expected to benefit substantially. Proposed pharma, textile, and IT parks along the route are also expected to create significant employment opportunities.
Dipanjan Banerjee said the expressway would transform logistics operations in UP by reducing dependence on traditional freight routes and distribution hubs.

“The missing piece was a seamless northern corridor connecting the NCR region directly with eastern UP districts. The Ganga Expressway effectively fills that gap,” he said. Banerjee added that Uttar Pradesh is rapidly emerging as a major logistics market due to increasing consumption, expanding industrial clusters, and the fast growth of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

He noted that sectors including e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, agricultural produce, and FMCG would particularly benefit from faster and more reliable cargo movement. Jitendra Srivastava said the expressway would improve supply chain predictability and strengthen connectivity to air cargo networks and freight corridors.

He pointed out that northern India currently accounts for nearly 31.3 per cent of the country’s air freight movement, and the new corridor would streamline cargo transportation to airports and ports. “The expressway will improve movement of perishables, textiles, and electronics while strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s competitiveness in global trade,” he said.

Nikhil Agarwal said the project is already attracting interest from companies planning to set up warehousing and distribution hubs in cities such as Prayagraj, Hardoi, and Shahjahanpur. He added that better road connectivity and comparatively lower land prices along the corridor are making outsourced logistics and warehousing operations commercially attractive.

“The next phase of logistics expansion in India will not be driven only by metropolitan cities, but also by emerging freight corridors like this one,” Agarwal said. Officials stated that the expressway would further strengthen integration with other major transport corridors, including the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, while supporting future industrial and export-led growth in the state.

The expressway passes through Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. According to Gupta, the project is expected to contribute more than Rs 1 lakh crore to Uttar Pradesh’s economy in the long term and support the state’s ambition of becoming a USD 1 trillion economy. The expressway is also planned to be extended further to connect with Uttarakhand in the future.

During the inauguration ceremony on April 29, Prime Minister Modi noted that the Ganga Expressway, whose foundation stone was laid in December 2021, was completed in under five years and ranks among India’s largest expressway projects. The Prime Minister also stated that expansion work has already begun and that the expressway will eventually extend beyond Meerut to Haridwar, while also connecting with other expressways through the proposed Farrukhabad Link Expressway.
