Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) anticipates further growth in cruise traffic following a 40% rise in passengers in the 2023-24 financial year. The MPA aims to bolster this momentum with the construction of an International and Domestic Cruise Terminal, set to be completed by March 2025.
The new terminal, along with associated facilities, is expected to enhance tourism, boost the local economy, and promote sustainable practices, thereby increasing the region's appeal in the global cruise market, a senior MPA official told PTI.
The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Maritime States Development Council meeting in Goa on 12-13 September. The rise in global cruise traffic has led to a notable increase in cruise ship arrivals at Mormugao Port, positioning it for substantial future growth, the official said.
In the financial year 2023-24, Mormugao Port saw a 15% increase in cruise ship calls and a 40% rise in passenger numbers compared to the previous year.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited the site of the new terminal during the meeting. The international cruise terminal will feature 24 immigration counters, 10 check-in counters, and a waiting lounge, while the domestic terminal will offer 12 check-in counters and waiting lounges.
The new facility will also include a commercial building with an experiential shopping zone, duty-free retail shops, lounges, and a food court, catering both to cruise tourists and the general public.
