Video conferencing platform, Google Meet, experienced a mega service shutdown on Wednesday, disrupting work for its millions of users across India, including professional and students.
Complainants rushed to social media platforms to report a spike in outage, especially when hybrid and remote work models remain popular in the country in places gripped by sudden cold wave or high air pollution levels.
Google Meet is one of the most widely used platforms for reliable video conferencing, indispensable for corporate houses and educational institutions.
Downdetector, the online platform that tracks the real-time status of various websites and services, registered a sharp increase in user-submitted outage reports for Google Meet on Wednesday, with issues starting to spike around midday especially in India.

Google had not yet responded to the disruption with a statement on what caused the issue and how many businesses and services had been affected by the outage.
However, amidst the chaos during peak working hours, users took to social media platforms to express frustration over missed deadlines and work meetings, some experiencing extreme latency even if they managed to join the call.
It also triggered a meme first, with people resorting to jokes about the ‘corporate world being on fire’, and ‘nature healing’, hinting at employees to take a nap.
