India's horticulture production is projected to decrease by 0.65 per cent to 353.19 million tonnes for the 2023-24 crop year, according to the government's third advance estimate released on Saturday.
Fruit production is expected to rise by 2.29 per cent to 112.73 million tonnes, driven by higher yields of mangoes, bananas, lime/lemon, grapes, and custard apples. However, the agriculture ministry noted that the production of apples, citrus fruits, guavas, litchis, pomegranates, and pineapples is likely to decline.
Vegetable production is projected at 205.80 million tonnes, with increases in tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, and other vegetables offsetting reductions in staples such as potatoes and onions.
Onion production is expected to reach 24.24 million tonnes, while potato output is likely to drop to 57.05 million tonnes due to lower yields in Bihar and West Bengal. Conversely, tomato production is anticipated to rise by 4.38 per cent to 21.32 million tonnes.
The estimate also highlights growth in honey, flowers, plantation crops, spices, and aromatic and medicinal plants compared to the previous year.
These figures reflect a mixed performance in India's horticulture sector, with some crops thriving while others encounter challenges in the 2023-24 crop year.
