The government has permitted the export of 30,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania, and 80,000 tonnes of broken rice to Djibouti and Guinea Bissau.

India has given the green light for the export of rice to Tanzania, Djibouti, and Guinea Bissau, as announced by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a recent notification. The government has permitted the export of 30,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Tanzania, and 80,000 tonnes of broken rice to Djibouti and Guinea Bissau.

Although the export of non-basmati white rice had been banned since July 20, 2023, to bolster domestic supply, exceptions are being made on a case-by-case basis to fulfill the food security needs of certain countries upon request.

Tanzania, located in East Africa, and Djibouti, situated on the northeast coast of the African continent, are set to receive shipments of rice from India. Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau, a tropical country in West Africa, will also benefit from the exports.

Specifically, 30,000 tonnes of broken rice are earmarked for Djibouti, while 50,000 tonnes are destined for Guinea Bissau.

India has previously permitted similar rice exports to nations including Nepal, Cameroon, Cote D' Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles.

Facilitating these exports is the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), a multi-state cooperative society. NCEL, jointly promoted by prominent cooperative societies such as the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) - commonly known as AMUL, the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO), Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd (KRIBHCO), and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), plays a crucial role in facilitating trade between India and various countries across the globe.
