Union Ports, Shipping & Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated an indigenously manufactured 1 MW Green Hydrogen Power Plant at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat on Thursday. The plant, which is the first of its kind in India's port sector, is capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This initiative is expected to play a vital role in the decarbonization of maritime operations and contribute to sustainable port management.
In his address, Minister Sonowal hailed the project as a fully 'Aatmanirbhar' and 'future-ready' hydrogen ecosystem, built entirely by Indian engineers. He praised the DPA for its commitment to green initiatives, referencing its previous deployment of India's first 'Made-in-India' all-electric green tug. He expressed hope that the plant would inspire other ports across the country to adopt similar eco-friendly and innovative technologies.
The Minister recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for a larger 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant during his visit to Bhuj on May 26. He commended the swift execution of the project, with the 1 MW module being commissioned within just four months.

This rapid implementation, he said, sets a new benchmark for the rollout of India's green hydrogen ecosystem. "Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030," Sonowal stated.
He further emphasised that this milestone is a powerful symbol of India's 'green transformation' under the Prime Minister's leadership and reinforces the nation's commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions. Sonowal extended his congratulations to the DPA leadership and the engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for their 'remarkable speed and precision' in delivering the complex project.
Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, also praised the achievement, calling it a 'proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for the entire country.' He added that the plant highlights India's 'growing leadership in clean energy.' The inauguration was attended by several dignitaries, including Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Secretary TK Ramachandran, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, and other senior officials from the ministry, the port, and L&T.
