The postal department will use its vast network of over 1.65 lakh post offices across the country for the sale of BSNL SIM cards and mobile recharge services

The Department of Posts (DoP) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to expand the state-owned telecom company’s mobile connectivity pan India.

The postal department will use its vast network of over 1.65 lakh post offices across the country for the sale of BSNL SIM cards and mobile recharge services, an official release said.

India Post has a massive reach in India’s rural landscape, which can serve as a powerful last-mile channel for cash-strapped BSNL to enhance its presence in both urban and rural geographies, the release added.

"This initiative aims to make BSNL's telecom services more accessible and affordable, particularly for citizens in the remotest parts of the country who often struggle with limited connectivity," it stated.

The collaboration will enable post offices to act as Points of Sale (PoS) for BSNL’s mobile SIM sale and mobile recharges, for which BSNL will provide both SIM stocks and training to DoP employees. The DoP, in turn, will facilitate transactions in a standardised and secure manner, the release mentioned.

Through this partnership, the two firms will also seek to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban households and advance the broader goals of Digital India, financial inclusion, and socio-economic development.

The collaboration was first implemented in Assam, where it showed significant success and demonstrated its potential as a scalable model for nationwide rollout, the release noted.
