Retail Inflation Shoots Up To 5.54% In September

India’s retail inflation climbed to 5.54 per cent in September 2026, marking the highest level recorded this year as rising food prices increased pressure on household budgets.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation rate was higher than the 4.83 per cent recorded in August. It also marked the first time that headline inflation crossed the 5 per cent threshold under the new CPI series.

The latest data from the National Statistics Office was released a day after the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee raised the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent to contain inflationary pressures.

Food inflation accelerated to 7.74 per cent in September from 5.97 per cent in August. Inflation in the food and beverages category stood at 7.36 per cent during the month.

Onion inflation crosses 100 per cent

Onions recorded one of the sharpest increases among essential food items. Inflation in onion prices rose to 108.09 per cent in September from 48.78 per cent in August.

Garlic inflation increased to 54.62 per cent from 43.60 per cent, while lemon inflation rose to 36.41 per cent from 15.15 per cent over the same period. Ginger, garlic, onions and lemons were among the food items registering the highest inflation rates.

Transport, personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services were also identified as important contributors to the overall increase in inflation.

Rural inflation remains above urban rate

Rural areas recorded a higher year-on-year inflation rate than urban areas in September. Based on the All India Consumer Price Index, with 2024 as the base year, rural inflation stood at 6.08 per cent, while urban inflation was 4.88 per cent.

In August, rural and urban inflation had stood at 5.24 per cent and 4.31 per cent, respectively, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

Garima Kapoor, deputy head of research and economist at Elara Capital, said the inflation reading was in line with expectations, with elevated food and energy prices continuing to affect broader inflation measures. She expects the RBI to maintain its rate-hike course amid persistent commodity prices and rising global yields, with two more increases possible during the current financial year.

Nirav Karkera, head of research and fund manager at W by Groww, said rates could ease towards the end of the year, although a soft base would delay a visible decline in headline inflation.

He said the inflation outlook would depend on healthy kharif arrivals, government measures to moderate vegetable prices, softer crude oil prices and a stable rupee. With costs continuing to rise and demand remaining soft to stable, policy rates are expected to stay tight as the RBI works to keep inflation within its tolerance band.
