In a notable development, India has granted permission for the export of 1,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Namibia, facilitated through the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL).
This decision comes despite the nationwide ban on non-basmati white rice exports imposed on July 20, 2023, aimed at bolstering domestic supply.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) confirmed the allowance, stating that such exports are sanctioned based on requests from certain countries to address their food security requirements.
In recent months, India's non-basmati white rice exports reached USD 122.7 million during April-May and an impressive USD 852.53 million for the entire 2023-24 fiscal year.
India has previously permitted similar exports to nations including Nepal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Seychelles.
The NCEL, through which the rice will be exported, is a multi-state cooperative society supported by major cooperative organisations in the country, such as the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (AMUL), IFFCO, KRIBHCO, and NAFED.
