US-based computer chip major Intel’s CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, was in India on Tuesday, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the company’s commitment to advancing India’s Semiconductor Mission with the establishment of a high-end electronic component ecosystem.

Intel has signed an agreement with the Tata Group to manufacture and assemble semiconductors in India for the local market, the company had shared on Monday.

After the meeting, PM Modi wrote in a post on X about his appreciation for the company’s support to India’s ambitious semiconductor mission, saying he believes Intel will benefit from working with the country’s young talent to help build a technology-driven future.

Tan also shared a post on the social media platform, in which he applauded the Prime Minister for creating a comprehensive semiconductor design and manufacturing policy.

“Honored to meet Prime Minister @narendramodi in New Delhi this afternoon. We had a wide-ranging discussion on a variety of topics related to technology, computing and the tremendous potential for India. I applaud the Prime Minister for putting in place a comprehensive semiconductor design and manufacturing policy and Intel is committed to support the India Semiconductor Mission,” he wrote.

While Intel has been in India for almost four decades, it is yet to produce its chipset in India despite having one of the biggest research and development centres here.

3D Glass Solutions’ packaging unit by Heterogeneous Integration Packaging Solutions Pvt. Ltd in Odisha is the first project in India which involves investment from Intel Corporation.

Backed by other US technology majors like Lockheed Martin, Applied Materials, etc., the project entails an investment of ₹1,943 crore with an annual production capacity of 5 crore units.

The project’s ground-breaking ceremony had been announced by a senior Odisha government official back in September.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and ministers of the government met other tech giant CEOs as well, including Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, who announced the company’s largest-ever investment deal in Asia in the form of USD 17.5 billion to be pumped in India over the next four years.

Nadella said on Wednesday that he is excited about the data centre capacity the company is setting up in India, which would help build infrastructure and sovereign capabilities for the country’s AI-first future.

It marks the third major AI-driven investment in the country in the past two months, while Microsoft’s India South Central cloud region, based in Hyderabad, is set to go live in mid-2026.

“We’re thrilled about all the data center capacity that is coming live. We already have stuff in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai. We are very excited about our India South Central cloud region, based in Hyderabad, that’s going to come up next year,” Nadella said at a Microsoft event.

“We are really excited about the investment we made. I had a chance to meet Prime Minister Modi yesterday (Tuesday) and discussed our excitement about it (investments),” he added.

Meanwhile, as India gears up to implement the Digital Personal Data Protection regime, Microsoft is introducing sovereign public cloud and sovereign private cloud for Indian customers.

“I think it is important for people to recognise that with sovereignty, you also want to ensure world-class cyber security and cyber resilience,” Nadella said.
