The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, has unveiled a new container vessel service, the Bengal Middle East Express (BMEx), which will link Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) directly with Jebel Ali Port in the UAE.
This service marks a significant upgrade in connectivity between Bengal and the Middle East.
Operating on the Haldia-Chittagong-Jebel Ali-Haldia route, the BMEx aims to streamline transit for exporters and importers by avoiding traditional transshipment ports, thereby cutting transit times and costs.
The new route is expected to reduce delays and operational expenses while enhancing overall supply chain efficiency.
The BMEx, launched in collaboration between Ocean Salute Line of Singapore and MBK Logistix, promises to boost global connectivity for Kolkata’s port facilities.
The inaugural vessel, Yong Yue 11, is slated to dock at HDC on September 6.
Port chairman Rathendra Raman expressed enthusiasm for the new service, stating, “The Bengal Middle East Express not only establishes a direct maritime link between Haldia and Jebel Ali but also paves the way for increased trade and economic growth. To support this, we have introduced substantial discounts on vessel-related charges for those calling directly from South East Asia, the Far East, and Middle East ports.”
