The Maldivian government expressed gratitude towards India on Monday for providing essential budget support to the island nation, hailing it as a genuine act of goodwill.
This positive development follows a recent visit by Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to India, where he met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
"This is a true gesture of goodwill which signifies the longstanding friendship between Maldives and India," he said. On Monday, the Island nation said that,"the Indian government has provided a budget support of USD 50 million to the Maldives"
The support was in the form of a rollover of USD 50 million Treasury Bill, for an additional year, through the State Bank of India, Male’, from 13 May 2024," said Maldivian foreign ministry in a statement.
He emphasized that this gesture highlighted the enduring friendship between Maldives and India.
The Maldives expressed profound gratitude for India's consistent support, stressing upon the ongoing collaborative efforts on numerous infrastructure and community development projects, generously backed by India, including significant grant assistance.
The statement further affirmed the Maldives' commitment to nurturing this cooperative partnership for the mutual advancement and prosperity of both nations.
During his visit to India on May 8, Moosa addressed recent contentious remarks concerning India, affirming that appropriate measures were being taken to prevent their recurrence.
Minister Jaishankar warmly welcomed Moosa, emphasizing the importance of nurturing ties based on mutual interests and sensitivity.
