The media and entertainment industry contributes ₹3 lakh crore to India's GDP, growing at a pace significantly faster than the overall economy, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, stated on Friday.

Speaking at the 19th India Digital Summit (IDS), Jaju also emphasised the need for regulatory reforms, including light-touch regulations and amendments to the Cinematograph Act to combat piracy and enhance accessibility.

Jaju highlighted government initiatives such as the establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies and the “Create in India Challenge,” which will be part of the ‘Waves Summit’ in February.

“These challenges span various sectors within the media and entertainment landscape. Many of these are also global challenges. I am pleased to report that the industry is leading the way, and we are receiving excellent participation from creators across the country,” Jaju said.

Addressing the industry's hurdles, Jaju acknowledged issues such as fake news, misinformation, and AI-driven recommendations, which can inadvertently result in algorithmic biases.

He also raised concerns about the inequitable returns many creators receive from digital platforms, copyright issues, and the impact of poor-quality content on children, particularly material that promotes disharmony or sexual violence. However, he expressed optimism that the industry has the potential to overcome these obstacles and establish itself as a global leader in media and entertainment.

The two-day ‘19th India Digital Summit’ is organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
