Meesho, a Softbank-backed e-commerce firm, announced on Friday that it had appointed Hari S Bhartia, the founder of Jubilant Bhartia Group, and three other experienced business leaders as independent directors.
In addition to Bhartia, Meesho has welcomed Kalpana Morparia, the former chairman of JP Morgan, to represent South and Southeast Asia. Meesho has also appointed Rohit Bhagat, the non-executive Chairman of the board at PhonePe, and Surojit Chatterjee, the CEO of San Francisco-based AI company Ema, as independent directors.
"As we embark on the next phase of growth, I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Surojit Chatterjee, Kalpana Morparia, Rohit Bhagat, and Hari S. Bhartia as independent directors to Meesho's board," Meesho, Founder and CEO Vidit Aatrey said in a statement.
Bhartia is the Founder and Co-Chairman of Jubilant Bhartia Group.
The Jubilant Bhartia Group comprises four primary companies that are listed on the stock exchanges in India, with a combined market capitalisation of around USD 7.65 billion.
Bhartia also holds the positions of Co-Chairman and Managing Director at Jubilant Pharmova Ltd, as well as Co-Chairman at Jubilant Ingrevia Ltd and Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd, which is the main franchisee for Domino's Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in India.
Prior to joining JP Morgan, Morparia worked at ICICI Bank, where she played a key role in the group's efforts to raise capital and in the merger of ICICI Ltd with ICICI Bank in 2002.
Bhagat currently serves as the non-executive Chairman of the board at PhonePe, an independent director at AssetMark, and the Lead Independent Trustee of the Franklin Templeton ETF Trust.
His previous board and advisory positions include roles at companies such as Axis Bank, Flipkart, and FreeCharge.
Chatterjee had guided Coinbase through a successful IPO as its Chief Product Officer in 2021.
Previously at Google, Surojit scaled Google Mobile Ads and Google Shopping into multi-billion-dollar businesses as the VP and Head of Product.
