The National Stock Exchange (NSE) set a world record on Wednesday, processing 1,971 crore (19.71 billion) transactions in a single trading day, according to its Managing Director and CEO, Ashishkumar Chauhan.
Chauhan announced the milestone on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "@nseindia handled the highest ever - world record - number of transactions in a single day today on June 5, 2024, in a 6 hours and 15 minutes (9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) single trading day - 1,971 crore (19.71 billion) orders per day. 28.55 crore (280.55 million) trades per day."
On the same day, India's benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and Nifty, made a significant recovery, surging over 3% each. This rebound followed a severe downturn in the previous session, triggered by below-expectation Lok Sabha election results.
The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 2,303.19 points, or 3.20%, to close at 74,382.24, driven by value buying in banking, auto, and oil shares. The NSE Nifty jumped 735.85 points, or 3.36%, to 22,620.35.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comfortably surpassed the majority mark of 272 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. However, for the first time since 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of the majority on its own, securing 240 seats and relying critically on its allies for government formation. The Congress party won 99 seats.
The Election Commission has declared results for all 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.
