The Centre disbursed nearly Rs 1,600 crore under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in the first half of 2024-25, with the large-scale electronics manufacturing sector receiving the largest share of Rs 964 crore, a senior official confirmed on Wednesday.
The electronics sector was followed by the pharmaceuticals sector, which received Rs 604 crore. Other sectors benefiting from the scheme include food products, telecom, and drones.
Electronics goods have become the fastest-growing segment in India’s export basket, with new manufacturing capacities established in the country due to the success of the Centre’s PLI scheme.
India's electronic exports surged by a strong 27.4 per cent to $22.5 billion in April-November 2024-25, up from $17.66 billion during the same period in 2023-24. Electronics have now risen to third place among the top performers in India’s export sector, after engineering products and petroleum, up from sixth place last year.
Additionally, in January this year, the government approved Rs 246 crore in incentives under the PLI scheme for Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors, aimed at incremental production in the automobile and auto components industry.
As of September 2024, the PLI scheme for the automobile and auto components industry has led to an investment of Rs 20,715 crore and incremental sales of Rs 10,472 crore.
Launched with a budgetary outlay of Rs 25,938 crore, the scheme aims to enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities for Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) products, address cost disabilities, and build a robust supply chain. Key features of the scheme include a minimum of 50 per cent domestic value addition, with eligibility for both domestic and export sales.
The PLI scheme has successfully attracted Rs 1.46 lakh crore in investment in the manufacturing sector, creating over 9.5 lakh jobs, according to official figures.
A total of 764 applications have been approved across 14 sectors under the PLI schemes. As of August 2024, the scheme has realised Rs 1.46 lakh crore in investment, resulting in incremental production and sales worth over Rs 12.50 lakh crore, employment generation of over 9.5 lakh, and exports exceeding Rs 4 lakh crore.
Incentives of Rs 2,968 crore have been disbursed in eight sectors during 2022-23, and Rs 6,753 crore in nine sectors during 2023-24, according to information tabled in Parliament.
