Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the new terminal buildings of the Pune and Kolhapur airports in Maharashtra on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the state's aviation infrastructure. The terminals are outfitted with a range of modern amenities to enhance the travel experience for passengers.
In attendance at the Pune airport were State Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, underlining the importance of the event for the state government.
Fadnavis seized the opportunity to announce plans for a new airport at Purandar in Pune district, highlighting the government's commitment to further developing Maharashtra's air transport network.
The newly inaugurated terminal at the Lohegaon international airport in Pune spans an impressive 7,50,000 square feet, boasting a capacity to accommodate over one crore passengers annually. The facility is equipped with 10 aerobridges and 72 check-in counters, facilitating smoother and more efficient passenger flow.
Meanwhile, the terminal at Kolhapur airport, covering 4,000 square meters, is designed with a focus on modern amenities. It features 10 check-in counters and incorporates elements showcasing the local culture and heritage, providing a unique sense of place for travelers.
During his address at the Pune event, Fadnavis emphasized the economic benefits of the proposed airport at Purandar, anticipating a significant boost to employment opportunities in the region.
He projected that the new airport could potentially elevate Pune's GDP by 2 percent, underscoring the strategic importance of aviation infrastructure development for economic growth.
The inauguration of these terminals signifies a significant step forward in Maharashtra's aviation sector, reflecting the government's dedication to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development across the state.
Along with Pune, the project launched by PM Modi includes 12 new terminal buildings of Pune, Kolhapur, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, Moradabad, Shravasti and Adampur Airports, along with laying of the foundation stone for new terminal buildings of Kadapa, Hubballi and Belagavi airports.
The 12 new terminal buildings are being developed at a total cost of Rs. 8,903 Crore, having a combined capacity to serve 615 Lakh passengers annually.
