Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the leadership teams of Tata Sons and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) on Thursday to discuss their Rs 91,000 crore semiconductor fabrication project in Dholera, Gujarat.
In a post on X, Modi said it was "a great meeting" where they discussed updates on their semiconductor manufacturing efforts, with PSMC showing interest in expanding its presence in India.
Railways and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that Tata Electronics and PSMC have signed a detailed technology agreement for the Dholera semiconductor fab, calling it a key step in creating a "holistic semiconductor ecosystem."
The project, which broke ground in March, is expected to create over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs and produce up to 50,000 wafers per month. The facility will focus on manufacturing chips for power management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers, and high-performance computing logic, addressing growing demand in sectors like automotive, computing, data storage, wireless communication, and AI.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran highlighted the company's history of pioneering industries in India, expressing confidence that their semiconductor venture would build on this legacy.
PM Modi emphasised that India offers an ideal environment for semiconductor manufacturing with an integrated ecosystem, ease of doing business, and a skilled workforce, making it the right time and place for such investments.
