AC and non-AC mail and express services are running on hiked fares since July 1, 2025, as per new rules’ implementation by the Ministry of Railways.
The IRCTC website cites rail fare hike by 1 paise per kilometre for non-AC Mail and Express trains and by 2 paise per kilometre for AC class fares.
However, there have been no changes in the fares of suburban trains, monthly season tickets, and Ordinary Second Class fares for journeys up to 500 kilometres. Those exceeding 500 kilometres would be charged at the rate of 0.5 paise per kilometre.

The ministry of railways, under pressure to improve its revenue from the passenger segment, said the hike was intended to improve the passenger segment’s revenue for Indian Railways, which contribute 30 per cent to their total earnings.
The railways' official notice stated: "With effect from 01-07-2025, tickets under Tatkal scheme can be booked through the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) its app only by Aadhaar authenticated users."
Additionally, from July 15, 2025, an extra layer of security will be added with passengers being required to complete OTP verification based on Aadhaar. An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number during booking, which must be entered to proceed, the railways website added.
