Ravi Shankar appointed Executive Director of RBI

Shankar assumes the senior leadership position after serving in a key role within the RBI, bringing with him more than three decades of experience across multiple functional areas of the institution.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday announced the appointment of Ravi Shankar as Executive Director (ED) with effect from July 1, according to an official press release issued by the Central Bank.


Shankar assumes the senior leadership position after serving in a key role within the RBI, bringing with him more than three decades of experience across multiple functional areas of the institution. "Prior to his promotion as ED, Shankar was serving as Adviser-In-Charge of the Department of Statistics and Information Management of the Bank," the RBI said in its statement. The Central Bank also confirmed the responsibilities assigned to him in his new role.
"As Executive Director, Shankar will look after the Department of Statistics and Information Management," the RBI stated.


In his new capacity, Shankar will oversee the same department he previously headed, ensuring continuity in one of the RBI's key data and statistical functions. The central bank highlighted his extensive experience as a career statistician and his contributions across several important areas of its operations.

"As a career central banker statistician, Shri Shankar has experience of over three decades in the Reserve Bank having worked in the areas of corporate, banking statistics, government securities market and settlement systems, debt management, and surveys in the Reserve Bank," the RBI said.


Apart from his operational responsibilities, Shankar has also played an important role in shaping India's macroeconomic data and policy framework through his participation in several high-level committees and working groups. "He has also served as member of several committees and working groups relating to macroeconomic statistics and policy issues," the RBI noted.


Highlighting his academic and professional qualifications, the central bank said, "Shri Ravi Shankar has a Master's Degree in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University, Diploma in Development Policy and Planning from the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (CAIIB)."


With his appointment as Executive Director, Shankar is expected to play a key role in strengthening the RBI's statistical and information management functions while contributing to the formulation of data-driven monetary and financial policies.
