In a historic achievement, over 7.28 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed by the July 31 deadline for the assessment year 2024-25, the Income Tax Department announced on Friday.
This marks a significant increase from the 6.77 crore returns filed last year.
Out of the total ITRs filed, a substantial 5.27 crore were under the new tax regime, while 2.01 crore were under the old tax regime.
The surge in filings culminated on the deadline day, with a staggering 69.92 lakh ITRs submitted on July 31 alone.
An encouraging sign of the broadening tax base, the department reported receiving 58.57 lakh ITRs from first-time filers.
