A high-level delegation from the Philippines held a meeting with industry officials from India, including those from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) to discuss ways to boost imports of key Indian food products.
An industry official said on Wednesday that an agreement was reached between the Indian and Philippines’ representatives that includes a commitment from the Philippines to prioritise increased imports of essential items from India that include rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, fruits, and peanuts.
The Philippines’ delegation was led by Secretary of Agriculture Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr.

The meeting, informed officials of the IREF, was centered on reducing reliance on Chinese products and promoting stronger bilateral ties between India and the Philippines so as to contribute to improved food security, economic expansion, and diversified trade amid evolving global economic conditions.
Another key development of the meeting was an agreement by the Philippine government to eliminate restrictions on Basmati rice imports.
Dev Garg, Vice President of IREF and Director of Shri Lal Mahal Group, who had participated in the discussions, said mutual agreements were reached to reinforce agricultural connections and diversify supply chains.
