The Indian rupee weakened by 13 paise to settle at 95.43 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, weighed down by a sharp rise in global crude oil prices and persistent geopolitical uncertainties.

The domestic currency remained under pressure as higher crude prices raised concerns over India's import bill and the potential impact on inflation. India is heavily dependent on imports to meet its energy requirements, making movements in international oil prices an important factor influencing the rupee and the country's external balance.

However, the decline in the rupee was limited by recent foreign capital inflows, which provided some support to the domestic currency, according to forex traders. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.38 against the US dollar and moved within a narrow range during the session. The currency touched an intra-day high of 95.37 and a low of 95.45 before finally settling at 95.43 (provisional), marking a decline of 13 paise from its previous close.

The rise in crude oil prices emerged as one of the key factors influencing currency sentiment. Global oil prices have climbed amid concerns over geopolitical developments and the possibility of disruptions to energy supplies. A sustained increase in crude prices could put additional pressure on India's trade balance and increase demand for dollars from oil importers.

Market participants are therefore closely monitoring developments in global energy markets as well as geopolitical tensions that could influence crude prices and broader investor sentiment. Any prolonged increase in oil prices could make the rupee more vulnerable by increasing the country's import payments.

At the same time, foreign capital inflows have provided a cushion for the rupee. Stronger foreign investment flows tend to increase the supply of foreign currency in domestic markets, helping offset some of the dollar demand generated by importers.

Forex traders said the rupee's movement was also influenced by broader developments in global financial markets. Investors remained cautious amid uncertainty over geopolitical conditions and the outlook for global interest rates.

The narrow trading range during Tuesday's session indicated that market participants were largely reluctant to take aggressive positions ahead of further economic and global cues. Traders are expected to track movements in crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and developments in the US dollar index for further direction.

The rupee's performance will also remain closely linked to domestic inflation trends and the outlook for India's economic growth. A stable domestic macroeconomic environment, along with continued foreign investment inflows, could provide support to the currency, while higher commodity prices and global risk aversion may exert pressure.

The currency market is also likely to remain sensitive to central bank policy signals in India and the US. Any changes in expectations regarding interest rates could influence global capital flows and, in turn, affect demand for emerging-market currencies such as the rupee.

For now, the rupee remains caught between opposing forces, with higher crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty weighing on sentiment, while foreign capital inflows are helping limit the downside. Market participants will continue to watch these factors closely as the currency navigates a volatile global environment.
