Indian benchmark equity indices ended nearly unchanged on Tuesday as investors adopted a cautious approach ahead of key monetary policy announcements by major global central banks and amid weak sentiment across Asian markets. Market participants largely refrained from taking aggressive positions, resulting in a range-bound trading session with modest losses for both the Sensex and the Nifty.
The 30-share BSE Sensex closed 69.86 points, or 0.09 percent, lower at 76,765.92. During the trading session, the index witnessed considerable volatility, touching an intraday high of 76,988.48 and a low of 76,672.77, moving within a range of 315.71 points before ending slightly in the red.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 10.60 points, or 0.04 percent, to settle at 23,985.35, reflecting the cautious mood that prevailed throughout the day. The domestic equity market opened on a subdued note as investors tracked mixed global cues. Although there were intermittent bouts of buying in select sectors, persistent uncertainty surrounding upcoming interest rate decisions by major central banks kept overall sentiment restrained. Investors also monitored developments in international trade, geopolitical tensions, and global economic indicators that could influence market direction in the coming days.
Market analysts noted that traders were reluctant to make significant investments ahead of policy meetings by leading central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. Any signals regarding future interest rate movements, inflation trends, or economic growth are expected to have a direct impact on global capital flows, currency markets, and emerging-market equities, including India.
Adding to the cautious outlook was the broad-based weakness witnessed across several Asian equity markets. Many regional indices closed lower as investors reacted to concerns over slowing global growth, uncertainty in international trade, and expectations surrounding monetary policy decisions. The negative trend in Asian markets also influenced domestic investor sentiment, limiting buying activity despite the resilience of the Indian economy.
Throughout the session, the Indian markets experienced sharp intraday fluctuations as buying in select heavyweight stocks was offset by selling pressure in others. Defensive sectors attracted some investor interest, while profit-booking was visible in a few stocks that had witnessed strong gains in recent weeks. The mixed performance across sectors prevented the benchmark indices from making a decisive move in either direction.

Despite Tuesday's subdued close, analysts said the broader outlook for Indian equities remains supported by healthy domestic economic fundamentals, improving corporate earnings, sustained retail investor participation, and continued investment through systematic investment plans (SIPs). However, near-term market movements are expected to remain influenced by global developments, particularly central bank policy decisions and foreign institutional investor activity.
Investors are also closely watching the ongoing corporate earnings season, as quarterly financial results from major listed companies are expected to provide further direction to the markets. Strong earnings could support valuations and improve investor confidence, while any disappointing performance may trigger stock-specific volatility.
In addition to earnings, participants are monitoring macroeconomic indicators such as inflation, industrial production, fiscal trends, and crude oil prices, all of which play an important role in shaping market expectations. Fluctuations in global commodity prices and foreign exchange markets are also likely to remain key factors influencing investor sentiment.
Market experts believe that while short-term volatility may persist due to external uncertainties, India's long-term growth prospects continue to remain favorable. Strong domestic consumption, ongoing infrastructure development, government reforms, and robust participation by domestic institutional investors are expected to provide support to equity markets over the medium to long term.
With major global policy announcements due later this week, investors are expected to remain cautious in the near term. Any indication from central banks regarding future interest rate trajectories could influence risk appetite worldwide and determine the direction of financial markets. Until greater clarity emerges, Indian equities are likely to witness stock-specific movements while broader indices continue to trade within a narrow range.
