The Indian equity markets on Thursday opened in the green despite surging crude prices, reflecting increased risk appetite among stock investors. The BSE Sensex surged over 558 points to open at 77,468.45, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed past the 24,200 mark, opening higher by 147 points at 24,225.45, driven by positive global cues and IT sector recoveries.
The Sensex opened up 0.72 per cent at 77,468.45; the Nifty 50 reclaimed 24,225.45 after previously closing at 76,909.68 and 24,078.30, respectively.
Broad-based buying lifted all sectoral indices in early trade, led by gains in IT majors like Infosys, TCS and Tech Mahindra.
Similarly, the broader indices traded in the green in the early trading session. The BSE Midcap Select Index was up by 129.54 points, while the BSE Smallcap Select Index added 71.01 points, or 0.78 per cent, to trade at 9,148.12.
Asian equities advanced on Thursday after Wall Street edged higher amid reports that the US is considering buybacks of longer-term Treasury securities to help ease borrowing costs, boosting investor sentiment.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 493.58 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 65,820 at the time of writing. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 277.93 points, or 1.09 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi added 373.01 points, or 5.42 per cent, and Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index was up by 10.81 points, or 0.28 per cent.
