In a major push to strengthen India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and OpenAI on Thursday announced a strategic partnership centred on plans to establish 100 megawatts (MW) of AI infrastructure in India, scalable up to 1 gigawatt (GW). The collaboration will also focus on accelerating enterprise AI adoption, building industry-specific solutions and expanding AI skilling initiatives for Indian youth.

Under a multi-year agreement, TCS’ HyperVault division will design and develop AI-ready infrastructure powered by green energy to support next-generation AI workloads. The proposed facility will include purpose-built, liquid-cooled data centres with high rack densities and seamless connectivity across major cloud regions, reinforcing India’s ambition to emerge as a global AI hub. “In the initial phase, TCS will develop AI infrastructure with 100MW capacity, with an option to scale to 1 GW. This infrastructure will power next-generation AI workloads and position India as a global AI hub,” the company officials said in a statement.

As part of the partnership, several thousand employees across the Tata Group will gain access to Enterprise ChatGPT to enhance productivity and drive innovation. TCS will also utilise OpenAI’s Codex to improve software engineering efficiency and outcomes. The companies plan to co-create industry-focused agentic AI solutions by combining OpenAI’s advanced AI platforms with TCS’ contextual expertise and domain knowledge. Through joint go-to-market initiatives, TCS will deploy, integrate and scale OpenAI’s AI offerings for enterprises in India and overseas, enabling organisation-wide AI transformation.

The announcement comes during the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi and follows closely on the heels of Infosys entering into a partnership with Anthropic to deliver enterprise AI solutions. Earlier, TCS had secured a USD 1 billion investment from TPG for its data centre business, with the private equity firm set to hold a 27.5–49 per cent stake.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said the collaboration under the OpenAI for India initiative aims to build the infrastructure, skills and local partnerships required to develop AI ‘with India, for India, and in India’, ensuring wider access and benefits across the country. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, described the agreement as a deep collaboration that marks a significant milestone in India’s aspiration to become a global AI leader. He said the partnership presents a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries while equipping India’s youth with the skills needed to thrive in the AI era.
