In a move towards shaping the future of India's broadcasting sector, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a Consultation Paper today, focusing on the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy-2024.
This initiative comes in response to a request from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, dated 13th July 2023, seeking TRAI's expert insights under Section 11 of the TRAI Act, 1997. The process began with the issuance of a Pre-Consultation Paper on 21st September 2023, which garnered 28 comments from various stakeholders.
The Consultation Paper, now available on TRAI's website (www.trai.gov.in), aims to gather further inputs from stakeholders by 30th April 2024. Notably, the paper focuses solely on seeking comments rather than inviting counter-comments, emphasizing the intention to shape inputs for the broadcasting policy.
With the broadcasting sector being a sunrise industry with immense potential for economic growth, the Consultation Paper emphasizes the vision, mission, objectives, and strategies crucial for its development, especially in light of emerging technologies.
Addressing critical issues prevalent in the sector, the Consultation Paper aspires to position India as a 'Global Content Hub'. It delves into policy and regulatory measures, strategies for enhancing economic contribution, universal reach, fostering innovation, job creation, skill development, and start-up promotion.
Furthermore, the paper emphasizes strengthening public service broadcasting, combatting piracy, ensuring content security, implementing a robust audience measurement system, and addressing socio-environmental responsibilities.
This Consultation Paper signifies a proactive step towards shaping the future trajectory of India's broadcasting landscape, with an aim to harness its full potential for national development and global competitiveness. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide their valuable inputs to shape the forthcoming National Broadcasting Policy-2024.
