The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will unveil a series of reciprocal tariffs on 2 April, which will take immediate effect, with automobile tariffs scheduled for enforcement on 3 April.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump was refining the tariff strategy alongside his trade advisors to ensure a “perfect deal” for American citizens and workers.

“My understanding is that the tariff announcement will come tomorrow,” said Leavitt. “He is with his trade and tariff team right now, perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal for the American people and the American workers, and you will all find out in about 24 hours from now.”

Leavitt suggested that the President was open to discussions with foreign governments and corporate leaders seeking adjustments to tariff rates.

She also indicated that multiple countries had already initiated contact with the administration regarding the proposed measures.

“Of course, the president is always available to take a call, always available for a good negotiation, but he is very much concerned with righting the wrongs of the past and demonstrating that American workers get a fair deal,” she added.

The official announcement of the tariffs is scheduled to take place at 4 pm (local time) on Wednesday at the White House Rose Garden. President Trump has referred to the day as “Liberation Day,” marking the next phase in his administration’s trade policy.

The forthcoming reciprocal tariffs form part of a broader set of import levies that President Trump has introduced since assuming office on 20 January.

These include heightened tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, industry-specific tariffs on metals, and, most recently, levies on imported automobiles.

The President reiterated his commitment to these measures last week, assuring that the “permanent” tariffs on cars would be implemented on Thursday as planned.
