Fear of failing in Class XII board examination even after qualifying NEET scares every NEET aspirant.
This fear turned into real for a girl from Gujarat who had secured 705 out of 720 in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) but later failed her Class 12 (science) board exams.
This was not it, she could not pass boards even after appearing for supplementary exams. Hence, she is now ineligible to get admission in any college.
It is implausible for a NEET topper to fail the board exams. But, it is certainly possible in some cases.
In the board exams conducted in March, she failed the physics and chemistry papers.
She then took the supplementary exams in June. In physics, she scored just 22 in the supplementary exam, compared to 21 from her first attempt.
In chemistry, she managed to get the passing mark of 33 on her second attempt. She had scored just 31 in the March exam.
At a time when irregularities in the NEET examination continue to rock the nation. This case holds its own relevance.
Sources close to the developments are of the view that the case needs to be probed as her board results cast serious doubts over the authenticity of her high NEET score.
Recently, when the centre-wise and city-wise NEET-UG results were declared, the student’s marksheets for NEET and HSC science — bearing the same first, middle and last names — began circulating on social media.
The stark contrast between the two sets of results — the exceptional NEET score and the board exam score of just 352 marks out of 700 — got widespread attention on social media.
Her NEET score was later reduced to 700 after a Supreme Court made a ruling on one question in the test.
The girl became one of the top performers in the NEET from Gujarat. Her overall ranking is the 99.94th percentile. This is a score that would earn her free seat in a top medical college. But as she did not pass boards, she did not qualify for admission.
While we have not verified the veracity of the case, chances can be that the girl was so engrossed in preparing for NEET that she did not focus on her board examination.
She might have been under this impression that undergoing preparation for NEET will be sufficient to succeed in the board examination, which is untrue.
It has been learnt that the answering pattern in boards is different from that of NEET. This can be the reason which led to her sorry fate.
On the contrary, the incident also reflects that students can resort to unscrupulous means to pass the NEET examination.
Giving bribes to seniors or others who would write their NEET papers. Getting access to the question papers from before and other ways that act as a shortcut to pass NEET.
While one does not know what led to this fate of the student, if she is at fault then she ought to be be punished.
Or, if the difference in the results is a result of some goof-up at the end of the authorities then that should be rectified.
In one way, a student’s career is at stake and on the other, the sanctity of NEET and board examinations appears questionable.
