Over one lakh students from central Assam's Kamrup district have joined forces in a postcard campaign, urging their parents to cast their ballots in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

The campaign, titled 'Ma-deutaloi votdanor ahbaan' (an appeal to parents to vote), orchestrated by the Kamrup election district, stands as a testament to the fervent desire for a robust democratic participation.

Scheduled for the third phase on May 7, the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency encompasses the Kamrup district.

Spearheaded by the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative, the primary aim is to realise a 100% voter turnout.

Hailing from 526 educational institutions across the district, students ranging from classes VIII to XI took to their pens on April 9, 2024, to craft heartfelt appeals to their parents.

Their poignant missives carry a simple yet powerful plea, to secure a more participative democracy and pave the way for a brighter future.

Keerthi Jalli, the Kamrup District Commissioner and District Election Officer talked in depth about the accountability of adults to future generations in shaping the nation's destiny.

"The campaign seeks to invigorate voter participation, cementing the democratic ethos," Jalli remarked.

Susanta Kumar Dutta, the District Development Commissioner and head of the SVEEP cell, outlined the ambitious outreach strategy, targeting approximately one lakh households comprising parents and grandparents, who constitute the bulk of the voter population.

"Our objective is to engage at least seven lakh individuals, with a special focus on youth voters, who comprise the remaining 10%," Dutta affirmed, highlighting the multifaceted approach to encourage democratic engagement.

In the heart of Assam, the rallying cry of students resonates beyond the classroom, echoing the collective aspiration for an inclusive and vibrant democracy.

"The very essence of democracy lies in the active participation of its citizens," remarked Keerthi Jalli, the astute District Commissioner and presiding District Election Officer for Kamrup.

"Through this concerted effort, we endeavor to instill a sense of responsibility and ownership of our democratic processes among all generations," she added.

With parents and grandparents constituting a substantial 90% of the voting populace, the campaign set its sights on reaching out to a staggering one lakh households, aiming to underscore the imperative role each individual plays in shaping the nation's destiny.

Susanta Kumar Dutta, the diligent District Development Commissioner and steward of the SVEEP cell, highlighted the significance of mobilizing this demographic.

"Empowering our citizens with the knowledge and impetus to exercise their franchise not only fortifies the democratic edifice but also sets a precedent for future generations," Dutta maintained.
