BJP candidates Kamakhya Prasad Tasa (Kaziranga) and Topon Kumar Gogoi (Jorhat) file nominations as Assam CM expresses confidence in victory.


As Assam BJP leader Kamakhya Prasad Tasa filed nominations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence, stating that the party would secure victory with a margin of 3 lakh votes.

 

Tasa, contesting from the Kaziranga constituency, submitted his nomination papers amidst a gathering of supporters. Sarma affirmed the party's optimism, asserting, "We will win with a margin of 3 lakh votes."

 

Meanwhile, Roselina Tirkey, the Congress candidate for the Kaziranga parliamentary constituency, also filed her nomination papers in Golaghat on Tuesday, setting the stage for a competitive electoral contest.

 

In a separate development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi, the sitting MP from the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency, accompanied by numerous supporters, filed his nomination papers at the Jorhat district commissioner office for the first phase of the parliamentary elections.

 

Addressing supporters, Gogoi expressed confidence in securing victory, vowing to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections by a margin of two lakh votes. 

 

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and other top-level BJP leaders joined him during the filing of nomination papers.

 

The Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency in Assam comprises ten assembly segments, adding complexity to the electoral landscape.

 

Ranjit Dutta, the BJP candidate for the Sonitpur parliamentary constituency, also filed his nomination papers on Wednesday, further intensifying the electoral race.

 

With a total of 14 parliamentary constituencies in Assam, elections are slated to occur in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7. 

 

Nationally, the general election for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases, commencing on April 19, with nearly 97 crore voters eligible to cast their votes. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

 

In the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 7 of the 14 seats in Assam. 

 

Subsequently, during the 2019 elections, the BJP increased its seat count to 9, with the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) claiming three seats each, while the AIUDF won a single seat.
