BJD's Lok Sabha MP Anubhav Mohanty joins BJP in the presence of senior party leaders.

Anubhav Mohanty, the Lok Sabha MP representing the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), officially switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, marking his departure from the ruling party in Odisha.

Citing a sense of "suffocation" within the BJD, Mohanty embraced the BJP fold.

Mohanty, a prominent figure in the regional film industry, commended the Narendra Modi government's governance, hailing the passage of significant legislative measures in Parliament over the past five years.

He specifically lauded milestones such as the abolition of triple talaq and the enactment of new criminal laws, underscoring Prime Minister Modi's leadership as emblematic of statesmanship.

Addressing the shift, Mohanty emphasised the need for support towards Modi's vision for a developed India, asserting that the ruling party has undertaken bold initiatives conducive to national progress.

In response to Mohanty's move, BJP's national general secretary Vinod Tawde extended a warm welcome, highlighting the party's appeal to individuals invested in India's development.

Tawde also dismissed opposition attempts to consolidate, asserting that those aligned with the BJP represent the aspirations of a burgeoning India.

Mohanty's transition marks the second instance of a sitting BJD MP defecting to the BJP ahead of the upcoming 2024 general elections, following in the footsteps of Bhartruhari Mahtab.

Previously a member of the Rajya Sabha, Mohanty secured his Lok Sabha seat from Kendrapara in 2019.
