The Trinamool Congress (TMC) lodged a formal complaint with the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday against BJP's sitting MP from Medinipur constituency, Dilip Ghosh.
The complaint cited Ghosh's alleged breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for making derogatory and offensive remarks targeting Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
In the complaint, the TMC demanded immediate and stringent action against Dilip Ghosh for violating the MCC and for his alleged distortion and disrespectful comments directed at Mamata Banerjee.
The party rebutted that no political entity or candidate should engage in activities or make statements that could be construed as personal attacks or offensive to decency and morality.
Earlier in the day, a controversy arose when a purported video clip surfaced, featuring senior BJP leader and MP Dilip Ghosh making disparaging remarks about Mamata Banerjee's family background.
Ghosh's comments, perceived as a personal attack, prompted him to challenge Mamata Banerjee to 'identify her own father'.
Terming Ghosh's comments as an egregious breach of decency and a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct, the TMC has urged the Election Commission of India to investigate the matter urgently and take appropriate action.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) swiftly responded, condemning Ghosh's comments as reflective of the "DNA of the saffron camp."
In the shared video clip, Ghosh can be heard deriding the TMC's slogan of "Bangla Nijer Meye ke chai (Bengal wants its own daughter)."
"When she goes to Goa, she says she is the daughter of Goa. In Tripura, she says she is the daughter of Tripura. First, let her clarify...," Ghosh remarked.
The former West Bengal BJP president, currently contesting from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat, took aim at the TMC's 2021 electoral slogan "Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chai."
Following Ghosh's remarks, the TMC announced plans to approach the Election Commission regarding the BJP leader's statement.
West Bengal Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja demanded an apology from Ghosh, decrying his comments as emblematic of the "misogynistic mindset of the BJP."
"@DilipGhoshBJP is a disgrace in the name of political leadership! From challenging the lineage of Maa Durga to now questioning the ancestry of Smt. @MamataOfficial, he has wallowed in the filthiest depths of moral bankruptcy," the TMC asserted.
Furthermore, the TMC asserted, "One thing is crystal clear: Ghosh has zero respect for the women of Bengal, whether it be the revered goddess of Hinduism or the only woman Chief Minister of India."
During the 2021 assembly polls, the TMC championed "Bengali pride" with the slogan "Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chai," crafting a narrative of sub-nationalism to counter the BJP's identity politics.
The "insider-outsider" discourse in West Bengal gained momentum before the assembly elections, with the ruling TMC embracing Bengali sub-nationalism to counter the BJP's Hindutva narrative, branding it as a "party of outsiders."
