The Brahmin community in Rajasthan is voicing its discontent with the Congress party's decisions leading up to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, particularly regarding candidate selections. After Congress nominated former Speaker C.P. Joshi from the Bhilwara parliamentary seat, Brahmins are demanding greater representation within the party hierarchy.
Varun Purohit, a Brahmin leader within Congress, expressed satisfaction with Joshi's candidacy, stating, "The community wanted the party to field at least one candidate for the upcoming elections." Purohit emphasized that the Brahmin community, constituting 15% of the electorate, felt neglected by the absence of Brahmin candidates.
Prominent ex-MPs and former MLAs from various states convened in Delhi to pressure the Congress high command for increased Brahmin representation within the party. Purohit stressed the importance of reintegrating Brahmins into the party organization for Congress's revival.
Despite Sunil Sharma being initially nominated for the Jaipur seat, controversy surrounding his alleged ties to a pro-RSS organization led to his withdrawal. This move left the Brahmin community without representation in Rajasthan's Lok Sabha constituencies.
Former Chief Minister’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Lokesh Sharma expressed frustration over the lack of Brahmin candidates, attributing the issue to local decision-making without proper assessment of ground realities.
In response, Congress Spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi affirmed the party's respect for the Brahmin community, noting Congress's history of appointing four Brahmin Chief Ministers in Rajasthan. Chaturvedi cited Sunil Sharma's initial nomination and subsequent replacement with Joshi as evidence of the party's regard for Brahmins.
