The Congress party is set to hold an important meeting of its extended Working Committee on Saturday in Delhi. The announcement was made by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who detailed that the meeting will begin at 11 AM at Hotel Ashok. This gathering will be followed by a press meet scheduled for around 1 PM.

 

In addition to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, there will also be a session of the Congress Parliamentary Party, which includes all newly elected Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs. This meeting will take place in the Central Hall of Parliament at 5:30 PM, followed by a dinner at Hotel Ashok at 7 PM.

 

The backdrop of these meetings is the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP did not achieve the 272-seat majority required to form a government independently.

 

This shift in parliamentary power dynamics has prompted a reassessment of alliances and strategies. Notably, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JDU, which secured 16 and 12 seats respectively, have expressed their support for the NDA. On the other hand, the Congress showed significant gains, winning 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019.

 

In the run-up to these meetings, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met with state party leaders and workers in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This meeting included key figures such as Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

 

During this meeting, DK Shivakumar advocated for Rahul Gandhi to be the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Shivakumar quoted Gandhi as emphasising the importance of winning over the hearts of those who did not vote for the Congress.

 

In the recent Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, the Congress secured nine seats, with a vote share of 45.43 percent. Overall, the BJP won 240 seats, which was a decline from their 2019 total of 303 seats.

 

Meanwhile, the Congress demonstrated a marked improvement, increasing their tally to 99 seats. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) garnered 292 seats, while the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, surpassed the 230-seat mark, presenting a strong challenge and defying many predictions.

 

The upcoming CWC meeting and subsequent Parliamentary Party session are seen as crucial steps for the Congress to strategize and consolidate its position following the latest electoral outcomes.

 

These gatherings will likely focus on evaluating the recent performance, discussing future tactics, and addressing the needs and aspirations of their constituents as they prepare for the new parliamentary term.
