Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail on medical grounds in connection with the alleged liquor policy case, as announced by the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday.
Kejriwal was released from Delhi's Tihar Jail on May 10 after being granted interim bail by the Supreme Court, following 50 days of incarceration on corruption charges related to the liquor policy scam. His bail is set to expire on June 1.
The Aam Aadmi Party stated that Kejriwal has lost 7 kilograms since his arrest, and his high ketone levels indicate a potential serious health issue. Due to his medical condition, doctors have recommended that Kejriwal undergo a Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan along with other medical tests.
This medical advice forms the basis for his request for an extension of his interim bail.
Since his release, Kejriwal has been actively involved in campaigning for the INDIA bloc for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Despite his participation in the campaign, he has been restricted from attending his official duties as Chief Minister.
The Supreme Court imposed specific conditions on Kejriwal while granting interim bail, including not interacting with witnesses or accessing official files related to the case. Furthermore, the court ordered that he should not comment on his role in the case.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement on March 21, shortly after the election schedule for the general elections was announced. His current bail conditions stipulate that he must surrender to authorities on June 2.
The Supreme Court emphasised that Kejriwal must adhere to his commitment of not signing any official documents unless necessary for obtaining clearance or approval from the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases over a six-week period from April 19 to June 1, with the results scheduled to be announced on June 4.
