The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has granted a one-year extension to Dr. Samir V. Kamat, the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This extension, approved on Monday, allows Dr. Kamat to continue his leadership of DRDO until May 31, 2025.
According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Ministry of Defence proposed the extension, which the Cabinet committee subsequently approved.
The official statement reads, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Defence for extension in service of Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), and Chairman, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) for a period of one year from 01.06.2024 till 31.05.2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
Dr. Kamat's extension comes as he continues to lead crucial projects and initiatives within DRDO, focusing on enhancing India's defence capabilities through advanced research and development. His leadership is seen as pivotal in driving innovation and achieving significant milestones in defence technology.
In a related development, the government has also approved a one-month service extension for Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande. Initially set to retire on May 31, General Pande's term has been extended until June 30, 2024.
This move, which surprised many, ensures continuity in leadership while the government appoints his successor. The Defence Ministry, in a statement, said, "The Appointments Committee of Cabinet, on May 26, 2024, approved the extension in service of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj C Pande for a period of one month, beyond his normal age of superannuation (May 31, 2024), that is up to June 30, 2024, under Rule 16 A (4) of the Army Rules 1954."
Government sources indicated that General Pande's successor would be appointed after the formation of the new government, following the election results on June 4. General Pande's extension ensures that the Indian Army continues to function smoothly during this transitional period.
Dr. Kamat's extension at DRDO and General Pande's temporary extension reflect the government's commitment to maintaining stability and continuity within key defence leadership positions.
Both leaders have played crucial roles in their respective domains, contributing significantly to India's defence readiness and technological advancements.
These extensions come at a time when the defence sector is witnessing rapid advancements and strategic shifts, requiring experienced and steady leadership to navigate the evolving challenges and opportunities.
Dr. Kamat's continued tenure at DRDO is expected to further bolster the organisation's efforts in pioneering cutting-edge defence technologies and ensuring India's strategic autonomy in critical areas.
