The Election Commission of India has made significant changes in the police leadership of two major cities in Punjab amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
IPS officers Nilabh Kishore and Rahul S have been appointed as the new police commissioners of Ludhiana and Jalandhar, respectively. This decision was announced by a spokesperson from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer on Wednesday.
The current police commissioners of Jalandhar and Ludhiana have been transferred to non-election duties. This move is part of the Election Commission's efforts to ensure fair and impartial conduct during the election process.
The officers being replaced are Swapan Sharma and Kuldeep Chahal, both from the 2009 batch of the Indian Police Service. They have been reassigned to duties that are not related to the ongoing elections.
Nilabh Kishore, a 1998-batch IPS officer, has taken over as the police commissioner of Ludhiana. Prior to this appointment, he served as the additional director general of police for the Special Task Force in Mohali.
Kishore's extensive experience in handling specialised tasks is expected to bring a strong leadership presence to Ludhiana during the crucial election period.
Rahul S, a 2008-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the police commissioner of Jalandhar. Before this new role, he was the deputy inspector general-cum-director of the vigilance bureau in Mohali.
Rahul's background in vigilance and his experience in managing law enforcement will be valuable as he oversees the electoral processes in Jalandhar.
The Election Commission's directive to transfer Swapan Sharma and Kuldeep Chahal and appoint Nilabh Kishore and Rahul S is a strategic move to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
The Chief Secretary of Punjab received a formal letter from the EC outlining these changes and the importance of non-election-related assignments for the outgoing officers.
These appointments aim to ensure that the election process in Punjab remains smooth and unbiased, reflecting the Election Commission's commitment to upholding democratic principles during the Lok Sabha elections.
