The Election Commission of India (ECI) is scheduled to hold a press conference today at 12:30 PM in Delhi, just one day before the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections on June 4. The media invite from the ECI announced the press conference titled “Press Conference by Election Commission of India on General Elections 2024.”

This event marks a significant moment in the country’s electoral history, as it might be the first time the ECI has convened a press conference immediately following the conclusion of polls. The announcement follows a busy weekend for the ECI, which included addressing public allegations made by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh.

On Sunday, the ECI requested factual information and details from Jairam Ramesh regarding his statement on social media. Ramesh alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had contacted 150 District Magistrates just days before the scheduled vote counting on June 4. The ECI has asked for a response from Jairam Ramesh by the evening of June 2, 2024, to take further necessary action.

The marathon seven-phase polling process for the Lok Sabha elections, which began on April 19, concluded on Saturday, June 1. As the nation awaits the results, exit polls have suggested a favourable outcome for the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The predictions indicate that the NDA might improve its performance compared to the 2019 elections, where it won 352 seats. Two specific polls have forecasted an increase in the BJP's tally from the 303 seats it secured in the last Lok Sabha elections.

If these exit poll predictions hold true, the BJP is expected to return to power when the votes are counted on June 4. Such a result would be historic, as it would make Prime Minister Narendra Modi the only Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to win three successive terms in Lok Sabha polls.

As the country prepares for the crucial vote counting day, the ECI’s press conference is likely to address various aspects of the election process, including the measures taken to ensure transparency and integrity in the vote counting procedure.

The outcome of the elections will not only determine the future political landscape of India but also reflect the electorate's response to the current government's policies and performance over the past five years.

The anticipation surrounding the vote counting is high, with political parties and the public eagerly awaiting the final results. The press conference by the Election Commission today is expected to provide important insights and updates on the electoral process, setting the stage for the significant events that will unfold on June 4.
