The Congress party has recently alleged receiving fresh notices from the income-tax department, demanding a substantial amount totalling Rs 1,823.08 crore. They have accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in what they term "tax terrorism," and have demanded that a charge of Rs 4,617.58 crore be levied against the BJP for purported violations of income-tax laws.
Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, party treasurer Ajay Maken, along with Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, highlighted the alleged discrepancies in the BJP's financial declarations to the Election Commission (EC).
They claimed that the BJP has consistently failed to provide accurate information regarding the names and addresses of their donors, as required by Form 24A.
Furthermore, the Congress leaders alleged that the BJP has collected a staggering amount of Rs 8,200 crore through what they term the "electoral bonds scam." They accused the BJP of using various methods, including prepaid and postpaid bribes, as well as shell companies, to accumulate funds through this scheme.
In response to these allegations, the Congress has vowed to continue its election campaign undeterred, asserting its commitment to the people of India. However, they have raised concerns about the timing of the income-tax notices, which coincided with the announcement of Lok Sabha polls. The Congress claims that these actions by the income-tax department are part of a concerted effort to financially cripple the opposition party.
Ajay Maken further alleged that the income-tax returns filed by Congress for the past 8 years have been reopened on what he described as "baseless and manufactured" grounds. He emphasised that these actions were intended to hinder the Congress's election-related activities, particularly during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress has criticised the income-tax department's actions, questioning why they are being subjected to taxation while the BJP and its allies remain untouched. They have called for intervention by the Election Commission to ensure that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
