The Congress party has nominated Lalbiakzama, a retired Mizoram Police Service officer and former state home secretary, as its candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the northeastern state.

State Congress chief Lal Thanzara unveiled Lalbiakzama's candidate during a formal announcement at the Congress Bhavan in Mizoram's capital.

Pointing on the the party's commitment to safeguarding Mizo culture and religion, Thanzara outlined the primary focus of their campaign, slated to kick off on March 28.

Lalbiakzama, aged 64, expressed his dedication to serving the people of Mizoram if elected.

He voiced concerns over the current state of the nation under the BJP-led NDA government, hinting at the possibility of a shift in leadership at the Centre post-elections, particularly given the unified stance of the opposition against BJP ideologies.

With a distinguished career in the Mizoram Police Service, including international missions in Bosnia and Kosovo under UN deployments, Lalbiakzama brings a wealth of experience to the table.

His tenure in the state home department culminated in him becoming the first MPS officer to hold the position of home secretary before retiring in 2020.

Lalbiakzama's political journey began with his entry into the Congress fold ahead of the Mizoram assembly polls in 2023.

Meanwhile, other contenders for the Lok Sabha seat include entrepreneur Richard Vanlalhmangaiha from the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and Mizo singer and lyricist Rita Malsawmi from the People's Conference (PC) party.

The main opposition party, MNF, is yet to announce its candidate, as incumbent Lok Sabha member C. Lalrosanga has opted not to contest. The BJP is also expected to reveal its nominee before the March 27 nomination deadline.
