As the Lok Sabha elections 2024 near their conclusion, the Congress party has decided to refrain from participating in debates on exit polls, scheduled to begin on June 1. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera made this announcement, stating that the party does not find it necessary to engage in "speculation and slugfest for TRP."
The exit polls are set to be released after voting in the final phase of the elections concludes on June 1. Khera emphasised that the Indian National Congress will only participate in debates after the election results are announced on June 4.
"Our statement on the reason for not participating in #ExitPolls is simple: voters have cast their votes and their verdict has been secured. The results will be out on 4th June. Prior to that, we do not see any reason to indulge in speculation and slugfest for TRP. The Indian National Congress will not participate in the debates on #ExitPolls. The purpose of any debate should be to inform the people. We will happily partake in debates from 4th June onwards," Khera posted on X.
The Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases. While the first six phases have already been completed, the final phase is set for June 1. In this last phase, a total of 57 constituencies from eight states and Union Territories will cast their votes. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.
This election is a significant contest between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP, which is seeking a third consecutive term, and the opposition, unified under the INDIA bloc, which aims to take power from the ruling party.
The decision by Congress to abstain from exit poll debates underscores the party's focus on awaiting the official results rather than engaging in preliminary discussions based on projections.
This move is seen as a way to avoid the often contentious and speculative nature of exit poll debates, which can sometimes skew public perception before the actual results are declared.
As the election process comes to a close, the anticipation builds around the outcomes and the subsequent political landscape. The Congress party's stance highlights a strategic patience, waiting for the official results before engaging in discussions and analyses. This approach could set a tone for a more fact-based and less speculative political discourse in the immediate aftermath of the elections.
