Representatives of the Global Kuki-Zomi-Hmar Women community in Manipur have declared their intention to boycott the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be conducted in two phases on April 19 and April 26.
This decision follows a consensus reached by the Young Kuki, a group representing Kuki youths, along with Kuki volunteers and the Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) Presidential Council.
They unanimously agreed that no member from the Kuki-Zo community should participate by filing nominations for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commission of India, the Global Kuki-Zomi-Hmar Women community expressed their sentiments, stating, "With a heavy heart, we would like to inform you of the decision of the women in our community to exercise their constitutional and legal right to boycott the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections."
They cited disillusionment and a lack of trust in both national and state administrations as the driving factors behind this choice.
The decision to boycott the elections stems from unresolved grievances and injustices faced by the community during the violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. These issues have remained unaddressed, prompting the community to take the drastic step in protest.
