Former Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, responded to the demand for a floor test by Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) supremo, Dushyant Chautala, with confidence, stating that he doesn't foresee a no-confidence motion happening anytime soon.
This assertion comes after the withdrawal of support by three independent MLAs from the BJP-led government.
Khattar dismissed the opposition's calculations as vague, expressing assurance that a floor test wouldn't affect the BJP government significantly due to the support of several JJP MLAs. He emphasised the need for the opposition to consider the broader picture beyond surface appearances.
Meanwhile, Dushyant Chautala, in a letter to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, requested a floor test following the withdrawal of support by the three independent MLAs on May 7. These MLAs, Randhir Golan, Dharmpal Gonder, and Sombir Singh Sangwan, extended their support to the Congress.
The Congress, reacting to this development, called for President's rule and fresh elections in Haryana, citing the withdrawal of support from the BJP-led government.
This move comes amidst ongoing Lok Sabha polls and only two months after Nayab Singh Saini assumed office as Chief Minister, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar.
In the 90-member House, the BJP holds 39 seats, while the Congress has 30. Additionally, the Jan Nayak Janata Party holds 10 seats, the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) has one, and the Indian National Lok Dal has one, alongside seven Independents.
Previously, six out of seven Independent MLAs supported the BJP. However, with three withdrawing their support, the BJP now has backing from three Independents and one HLP MLA, totaling 43 MLAs in government.
As the state gears up for the Lok Sabha polls on May 25, the political landscape remains dynamic, with alliances and support shifting among parties.
