Omar, Mehbooba trailing in J&K seats

Omar was trailing Awami Ittehad Party leader Engineer Rasheed, who is contesting as an independent candidate for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat (PTI/FILES).

Early trends suggest National Conference vice president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are trailing in the Baramulla and Anantnag-Rajouri seats of Jammu and Kashmir, respectively.

Omar is trailing Awami Ittehad Party leader Engineer Rasheed, who is contesting as an independent candidate for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat.

Meanwhile, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi of the NC is leading in the Srinagar constituency against PDP’s Waheed Parra.

In the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, NC's Mian Altaf Larvi is ahead of PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti. In Jammu, BJP's Jugal Kishore Sharma is leading against Congress’s Raman Bhalla, and in Udhampur, Dr Jitendra Singh of the BJP is ahead of Congress's Ch Lal Singh.

Vote counting for the five Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday under strict security measures.

The process occurs at nine designated centres across the UT, with the Election Commission closely overseeing the operations to ensure a smooth and fair counting process.

The counting is taking place at nine centres for the constituencies of Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag-Rajouri, Kathua-Udhampur, and Jammu.

For the Srinagar constituency, counting began at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar.

The main contenders are Syed Ruhullah Mehdi of the National Conference (NC) and Waheed Ur Rehman Parra of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Security is robust with local police and CAPFs ensuring an uninterrupted process.

In Baramulla, counting is being conducted at the government boys' degree college. The main candidates are Omar Abdullah of the NC, Sajad Gani Lone of the People's Conference (PC), and Engineer Rashid of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP).

The Anantnag-Rajouri constituency has two counting stations: the government boys' degree college in Anantnag and the government postgraduate degree college in Rajouri. Mian Altaf Ahmad of the NC and Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP are the main contenders.

In Kathua-Udhampur, counting is happening in Udhampur and Kathua towns. The main contest is between Dr Jitendra Singh of the BJP and Choudhary Lal Singh of the Congress.

For the Jammu constituency, counting is taking place at MAM Degree College and the Government Polytechnic College in Jammu City.

The main candidates are Jugal Kishore Sharma of the BJP and Raman Bhalla of the Congress. Both Dr Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma are seeking re-election for a third consecutive term.

Additionally, a counting centre for migrant voters from Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri has been set up at J&K House in New Delhi.
