According to PM Modi’s guarantees in the BJP manifesto, released on Sunday in New Delhi, more women will become lakhpatis, fly drones and be encouraged to participate in the tourism sector by opening homestays.
Promises included healthcare initiatives to prevent cervical cancer, among other diseases, push to women to join the workforce and easier access to marketplaces.
The BJP said three crore women would be added to its Lakhpati Didi scheme after one crore women had been empowered with the support of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission. Each woman earns an annual household income of Rupees One Lakh (₹1,00,000) or more as part of the scheme.
More women in the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will be equipped with the skills and tools required in key service sectors like IT, healthcare, education, retail and tourism to increase their income. “Women will be encouraged to open homestays,” as part of tourism initiatives, PM Modi said at the manifesto launch event.
About 15,000 women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will get agricultural drones as part of the Drone Didi programme to assist in tasks such as crop monitoring, spraying fertilisers and sowing seeds.
Women SHG enterprises will be given easier access to markets through schemes such as One District One Product, which encourages production of indigenous and specialised product in each district; the government e-marketplace; Farmer Producer Organisations and the Open Network for Digital Commerce.
Working women’s hostels and crèches will be opened near industrial and commercial centres to make it easier for women to join the workforce.
Sportswomen have been promised better facilities and programmes, and healthcare initiatives are to be launched to prevent and treat anaemia, breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis.
For dignity and convenience, more women’s toilets are to be built.
Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will be systematically implemented to ensure representation for women, not just in Parliament but the State Legislature too.
