Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, dismissed the findings of the Economic Advisory Council to the PM (EAC-PM) regarding the decline in the Hindu population, labelling it as a "report from Whatsapp University."
He questioned the credibility of the report and demanded to see it before providing a response, expressing scepticism about its source and validity.
The EAC-PM report highlighted a decrease in the share of the Hindu population in India by 7.82% between 1950 and 2015, while the Muslim population saw an increase of 43.15% during the same period.
This revelation has sparked political debates, with parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress exchanging criticisms over the demographic shifts.
Amit Malviya, the BJP's in-charge of the National Information and Technology Department, criticised the Congress party, blaming decades of its rule for the decline in the Hindu population.
He warned that if the country were left to Congress, there would be no place for Hindus, citing the significant decrease in their share compared to the increase in the Muslim population.
Echoing similar sentiments, Keshav Prasad Maurya, Uttar Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister, accused the Congress of engaging in Muslim appeasement politics, which, according to him, led to the demographic imbalance with a rise in the Muslim population and a decline in the Hindu population.
The EAC report also shed light on the demographic trends of other religious communities in India. The Christian population saw a moderate increase from 2.24% to 2.36% between 1950 and 2015, while the Sikh population witnessed a rise from 1.24% to 1.85% during the same period.
The Buddhist population experienced notable growth, jumping from 0.05% to 0.81%. However, not all religious communities saw positive trends. The share of Jains in the Indian population declined from 0.45% in 1950 to 0.36% in 2015.
Similarly, the Parsi community witnessed a significant decline of 85%, dropping from 0.03% to 0.004% during the same period, according to the EAC report.
